Why It’s Important
EMOTIONAL HEALTH, ABUSE & RESILIENCE ARE CONNECTED.
Emotional wellbeing is vital to living a life of wholeness, meaning and contentment. And yet, the trauma we face as children and even as adults, like abuse, family dysfunction and racism, shape our brain in ways that can disrupt our wellbeing for life. Our inability to regulate our emotions can make us abuse those closest us and continue the cycle of intergenerational trauma and violence. But fortunately, recent advancement in science tells us that the story doesn’t have to end here.
CHILDREN WHO WITNESS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUFFER LIFE-LONG CONSEQUENCES.
Understanding how trauma and toxic stress affects us can empower us to heal. There are things we can do to buffer the negative effects of adversity. Building the skills and relationships that help us cope, providing the support and services that help families thrive, all these help to build resilience in our families and communities, and sets up a strong foundation for the wellbeing of generations to come.

Our Approach
Building community resilience requires a framework that is deep-rooted, sound and comprehensive. We focus on the unmet needs of the most vulnerable to transform our community’s support system.
1 in 3 Canadian Muslim women is a victim of spousal violence.
1 in 2 experience other forms of psychological abuse.
We realize the lack of culturally sensitive & trauma informed supportive services available to those who have experienced trauma, mental health issues & abuse in the Muslim community.
We also understand the power of Imams to enrich the Muslim community’s support system.
IMAMS ARE OFTEN THE FIRST AND ONLY PROFESSIONAL A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIM COMES TO
Our goal is to facilitate collaboration between advocates, service providers and faith community and together, develop culturally sensitive and trauma informed tools and avenues to effectively fight family violence and barriers to mental health in the Muslim community.
